globe lights

By Andy on September 18, 2013

Globe lights (sometimes called ball lights) are synonymous with Eichler Homes. Unfortunately, they sometimes get edited out during owner ‘upgrades’. We were happy (and lucky) to discover pretty much all of ours intact. As is typical, our Eichler features a few different globe types and sizes.

We have five 10″ globes with stems (above). One in our entryway, three in the kitchen and one in our dining area. We also have five 8″ globes without stems (below). Three in our corridor and one each in the laundry area and master shower room.

We have another 8″ globe outside our front door. We set up an automatic timer for this one, for security, and to help us find our keys in the dark. I’m guessing there may have been more external globes originally, but this is all that remains.

We also have a 6″ version (below) in the second bedroom. This is definitely a good match, but I’m not certain it’s original. There are no other globes, or any fixed lighting in the bedrooms. Instead, the light switches link to sockets, designed to be used with plug-in lamps.

Stretching the globe theme a little, our guest bathroom features a trio of 3″ globe-style bulbs. This looks pretty old but I doubt it’s original. Either way, it’s sort of in-keeping and will stay for a while at least. The unit just needs refinishing.

The master bath has a newer-looking standard-sized bulb ensemble (below) which may have come straight from Home Depot. In any case, it will remain part of our globe family, because we have other priorities right now.

So, how many globes did you count? Just kidding. Originally, Eichler light fixtures were made by Lightolier. They are no longer available but mainstream suppliers offer similar alternatives. If you’re lucky, you can still pickup original globes on Craigslist, eBay etc.

Hi Andy & Karen – I just came upon your very amusing web page – a little bot told me about your visit to SMUD. I’m a partner at Dreyfuss & Blackford Architects, and I can say that SMUD pretty much put our firm on the map back in the late 1950’s. I’m always glad when folks appreciate it, as I do. I am also glad to see thoughtful, creative people such as yourselves migrating to Sacramento – welcome to the neighborhood. I’m sure you’ve met Gretchen and other Sac Mod folks. I hope you enjoy your stay, and perhaps our paths will cross.

Hi Peter, thanks for stopping by! Our SMUD visit was pre-car, so (having trekked across town) it was nice to get the reward of seeing such spectacular architecture! Yes, we’ve met Gretchen and co! Everyone has been very welcoming, and it’s great to meet like-minded people. We plan on being here long-term, so hopefully we will cross paths at some point…

I love the outdoor globe light. Any idea where I could get something similar?

Hi Cody. Before we managed to source original fixtures to reinstate/add outdoor globes, we bought a similar fixture from Home Depot. Main difference being the base/collar is white, and is more curved. We sprayed ours black, and it looked pretty good/authentic. However, just searched HD online and couldn’t find it. They do have a smaller 6″ version, with a black base: http://tinyurl.com/jo3lf4v –you may want to check your local HD for the 8″ version. Hope that helps.

Hi Andy & Karen. Are you able to tell me the length of the stem on the Eichler globes please? Regards, Karen

Hi Karen. The globes in our kitchen/entry have stems of around 15 inches. The stems on Eichler globes do vary though (even within the same Eichler) depending on the roof pitch/ceiling height.
