our neighborhood
We live within a tract of around 60 Eichler Homes, in Sacramento’s South Land Park Hills neighborhood. There were plans to build many more Eichlers here, but demand was low in the mid-50s, so they stopped way short.
Famously (at least within the neighborhood) we even have an “Eichler Street”…ironically without a single Eichler Home on it. Instead, Eichlers span portions of just three parallel streets; South Land Park Drive, Fordham Way and Oakridge Way.
We took our first walk around the neighborhood the other day, and immediately got a dose of yard envy. Our landscaping has been a little neglected over the last few years, and most people round here do a pretty good job maintaining their yards.
Despite the limited number of Eichler models in the neighborhood, custom elements and owner design choices make each home unique. There are some drool-worthy examples, giving us plenty of design inspiration for our own place.
As with all the Eichler neighborhoods we’ve seen, there are some less attractive examples (not shown here) with a mix of deferred maintenance, ill-advised additions, and ‘upgrades’ not in-keeping with the original Eichler aesthetic.
We’ll do our best not to fit this category. We’ve already been inside a few local Eichlers, thanks to our welcoming neighbors, and we hope to see many more. It really is fascinating to see how people interpret these wonderful homes.
